Why this petition matters

I/we support the position that:

The Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing should withdraw Bill 23 in its current draft as it will permanently damage Ontarian's democratic rights, human rights, and ecosystem.  We encourage broad consultation on this bill before it is submitted again.

We stand in solidarity with the issues of Bill 23 as articulated by ACORN Canada, The Ontario Headwaters Institute, and Environmental Defence  and add the following issues

These issues are detailed below:

  1. The Act strips community members and groups like South JT GROWs of their democratic right to engage in fair and due process by representing their interests to the Ontario Land Tribunal (OLT). These petitions are NOT frivolous. We resent your name-calling of concerned citizens as 'NIMBYs or BANANAs"- you are minimizing the valid concerns of community members as frivolous and anti-development. We WANT development, but we want it responsibly and catering to those who need housing the most. In several local cases, the City of Toronto has failed to listen to community concerns of safety, affordability, and human rights. The OLT is our only chance for fair discussion. The OLT has many ways of assessing frivolous appeals. There is no need for this kind of undemocratic legislation.
  2. This Bill will increase the number of unaffordable luxury condos within Toronto, wasting precious space in Toronto while citizens will continue to go unhoused. This legislation solves NOTHING and only increases the profits of developers.
  3. There is FAR too much power delegated to the Minister of Housing, who cannot possibly understand the nuances of local communities. Stop the overreach and let local communities with proper expertise make this important decisions

Stop Bill 23 and take it back to the drawing board!
